– CREATIVE PORTFOLIO CASE STUDY

Creating an artist portfolio website that shows the breadth and development of the work.

See how website content organisation, gallery structure and exhibition history helped turn a substantial body of work into a clearer, more engaging artist website.

– THE CHALLENGE

More than a gallery of paintings.

Susan Edwards had a substantial and varied body of work, but the website needed to do more than display images. It needed to help visitors understand the breadth of the portfolio, the progression of the work and the experience behind it.

The challenge was to create a clear structure without flattening the individuality of the paintings or making the site feel over-organised.

The project combined website optimisation, content organisation and portfolio structure to make the site clearer, easier to navigate and better able to demonstrate Susan’s experience.

– THE FOUNDATION

Five core pages established a clear starting point.

The website began with a focused structure that covered the essentials while leaving room to expand.

01

Home

An introduction to the artist, the work and the visual direction of the site.

02

Paintings

A central route into the portfolio and its different collections.

03

About

Background, experience, development and the story behind the work.

04

Exhibitions

Current activity alongside a record of previous exhibitions.

05

Contact

A simple, direct route for enquiries and opportunities.

– EXPANDING THE PORTFOLIO

Artwork organised by collection and creative direction.

The paintings were then divided into meaningful catalogue types so visitors could explore the work in a way that felt intuitive rather than being faced with one long, undifferentiated gallery.

01

Semi-Abstract

Work exploring shape, colour, atmosphere and interpretation.

02

Seascapes

Paintings focused on coast, movement, light and open water.

03

Landscapes

Work rooted in place, observation and changing environments.

04

Travel Series

Paintings developed through journeys, locations and remembered places.

05

Figures

Work centred on people, gesture, form and character.

– EXHIBITIONS

A rolling current section and archive to show history and expertise.

The exhibitions area was designed as an evolving record rather than a static list. Current and forthcoming exhibitions could be promoted prominently, while past exhibitions moved into an archive.

This helped the website stay current while also demonstrating longevity, professional activity and the depth of Susan’s experience over time.

CURRENT & FORTHCOMING

What visitors need to know now

Dates, venues, event details and relevant links remain easy to find and update.

EXHIBITION ARCHIVE

A visible record of experience

Previous exhibitions are retained to show history, credibility and the continuing development of the artist’s career.

– WHY CONTENT MATTERED

Helping visitors understand the work, not just view it.

Carefully written content gave context to the paintings, the artist’s journey and the development of the portfolio. It helped communicate both the breadth of the work and the experience behind it.

The result was a website that felt more complete, more professional and easier for visitors, galleries and potential buyers to navigate.

– THE OUTCOME

A portfolio website with clearer structure and a stronger story.

The website now presents Susan Edwards’ work through clear collections, a considered artist story and an exhibitions section that balances what is happening now with a meaningful archive of past experience.

The result is a more effective artist portfolio website, with stronger content organisation, clearer navigation and a structure that can support future paintings, exhibitions and new series without losing clarity.
